Frost & Sullivan has released its bi-annual Competitive Analysis of the Global Software License Management Market, once again positioning Gemalto as the clear market leader in software license management (SLM) for 2015. Frost & Sullivan attributes Gemalto’s dominant position in the total SLM market to its widely adopted and trusted Sentinel product line.
SLM enables software publishers and intelligent device vendors to efficiently monetize their products, particularly those in enterprise and networked deployments. Solutions in this space help developers enforce entitlements and automate back-office systems, including protection, licensing, usage tracking, and auditing.
“Frost & Sullivan’s recognition of Gemalto’s leadership in software licensing validates our long-term strategy targeting intelligent device vendors and software providers”, said Shlomo Weiss, Senior VP and General Manager of Software Monetization at Gemalto. “Our innovative approach to providing a common software monetization platform that supports any type of licensing and enforcement technology for on-premise, cloud, or hybrid deployments is being well received”, he noted. “In particular, we see that the IoT has expedited the evolution of intelligent device vendors; both in terms of their transformation from hardware to software-driven business model, and their need to partner with a vendor, such as Gemalto, that can assist with this transformation. Embracing software-driven business models creates new opportunities for our customers to generate revenue streams and enables them to easily adapt to the emerging demands of the technology landscape. We plan to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge software licensing by continuing to provide our customers with robust, market-leading software monetization technology”.

Join us on June 16 at 11 am (EDT) for Gemalto’s second Ask the Experts session of the year, featuring Amy Konary, Research VP of Software Licensing and Provisioning at IDC, and Mark Seery, Sr. Director, Strategy and Corp Development at Juniper Networks. This live webinar will look at how cloud and virtualization are expediting the adoption of software business models and what this means for intelligent device vendors and software providers.
For a long time now, many product or device-oriented companies have been attempting to shift the primary focus of their business from shipping boxes to delivering positive outcomes for customers. The success of this approach typically involves a transition to new business models that rely more heavily on software to help cultivate customer relationships and future-proof business processes. This webinar will focus on strategies for using software business models and monetization approaches to successfully launch or grow innovative businesses.
Key questions answered will include:
For many companies in the midst of this kind of transformation, one of the biggest challenges is getting buy-in from the various internal stakeholders. Unless a company’s management recognizes the new business as a growth engine that is key to its future health, it will be hard to get the support needed for a successful transition. Mark Seery will talk about his company’s efforts in moving from a hardware to software-centric business and his overall vision for where Juniper is heading.
Recording will be sent to all registrants.

The Sentinel Lunch & Learn series continues to tour the US, introducing monetization strategies and technologies that can future-proof your business. Whether you are a software vendor or intelligent device manufacturer, you are invited to attend one of our local events, where you’ll receive practical advice from industry experts. To view recordings of our previous sessions with Aria, click here for Burlington, MA and here for Texas.
In April, we attended the Internet of Things North America in Chicago, IL, which focused on cloud-based control of devices, equipment, and operations for the industrial, manufacturing, and enterprise environments. Then in May, Gemalto’s Omkarnath Munipalle joined a panel of industry experts at the Silicon Valley Pricing Forum in California to share insights on monetizing innovations and implementing pricing changes and systems.
On August 1-4, Gemalto’s Sentinel team will be in Austin, TX for NI Week, where they will be exhibiting and providing training on out-of-the-box security and licensing for NI LabVIEW. Then on December 7-8, the Sentinel team will sponsor Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, CA; a platform for networking and embedded software thought leadership. Visit the Gemalto Sentinel booth at either event for a demo and a chance to win an Apple Watch!

You’re probably familiar with the adage, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”. While that may hold true in certain situations, it’s not necessarily the case in business. Homegrown licensing solutions can be complicated to set up and costly to maintain, which is why more and more companies are choosing to leave their software licensing and entitlement management needs to the pros. This is a smart move considering that a company’s time and money are best invested in its core competencies. We asked the Director of Marketing at Trimble Navigation, Bill Graber, why the leading maker of precision GPS tools chose Gemalto Sentinel to support its growing subscription base.
LEAP: What was wrong with Trimble’s previous license management system that caused you to move over to Sentinel?
BG: The simple answer is that it had grown too complex to meet our customer’s needs. We currently have close to half a million assets, so it made sense for us to migrate to a more sophisticated solution. We chose to implement Sentinel LDK with EMS because they support a broad range of license and connectivity options and make it simple for machine operators to obtain the production data they require. Having these capabilities enables us to keep up with new technology and adapt our offerings wherever necessary.
LEAP: What are some of the practical challenges you face when delivering licenses on large-scale machines?
BG: We’re dealing with some very large construction equipment such as the bucket wheel loader, which stands 315 feet tall – the same height as London’s Big Ben! Needless to say, it would take a head for heights and nerves of steel to manually deliver a license onto one of those bad boys. Machines located in hostile environments present an even greater challenge. Can you imagine sending a guy out to an alligator-infested part of the Amazon to insert a thumb drive license on a hydraulic generator? It might seem like an extreme example, but that’s kind of equipment we’re dealing with.
LEAP: Sounds like a job for MacGyver! Surely there must be a less heroic alternative to manual license delivery in those situations?
BG: There is. We use an over-the-air (OTA) installation, which, besides being a safer option, is much more cost-effective in the long run as it doesn’t require human input. Having said that, the initial outlay for a typical homegrown system can set you back millions of dollars, once you’ve factored in the code generator and hosting or OTA delivery.
LEAP: Given the number of companies Trimble has acquired over the years, how does it manage multiple disparate licensing systems?
BG: Had you asked me that question prior to us introducing Sentinel EMS to our back office, I would’ve said “With great difficulty”. Fortunately, we’ve come a long way since the days of running 20-30 different licensing systems, each with multiple iterations. We now have a much more efficient way to generate, report on, and manage user entitlements, all from a centralized platform. And because Sentinel EMS automates every aspect of our proactive marketing and sales operations lifecycle, we can do so with more accuracy and less expense.
LEAP: How confident are you in your implementation with regards to security?
BG: In the past, our experiences with theft have been limited to image duplication of virtual machines, activation codes being cracked, and – in our pre-Gemalto days – protection key duplication. These violations have set us back millions of dollars, which is why we’re relying on Sentinel solutions to protect us from illegal activity in the future. We wouldn’t have picked them if we didn’t think they were up to the task.
LEAP: Any parting thoughts about the value Sentinel brings to your business?
BG: We are really appreciative of the fact that Sentinel enables us to go after large-scale construction projects with customized, best-of-breed license delivery platforms. I don’t think we’d feel nearly as confident playing in the big leagues without Gemalto helping us maintain our competitive edge.
